Yoga is a great activity for all ages and fitness levels!

Yoga is an activity that provides overall wellness – physically, emotionally, and mentally. Through regular practice, yoga can increase flexibility, strength, and the range of motion to the body. There are a variety of different techniques and focuses in yoga; however, all include postures and movement, breath and body awareness, and a meditative focus.

Benefits of Yoga for Seniors

Yoga can be a wonderful form of activity for seniors. As we get older, muscles tend to stiffen, joints lose their range of motion and chronic problems such as osteoporosis, arthritis and heart disease become a greater risk. Yoga can help slow down the process of aging by maintaining muscle elasticity and flexibility, reduce the swelling of joints while strengthening the muscles, engagement of the mind for alertness and wakefulness, as well as increase overall mobility, balance and stability.

Quick list of benefits (when practiced regularly (2 -3 times/week)):

  • Increase mobility and strength
  • Reduce swelling of joints
  • Improved stability and balance reducing chances of falls
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved attitude and well-being
  • Improved blood flow
  • Lowered blood pressure and cholesterol
  • An aid to managing depression and anxiety
