Signage to help navigate in Innisfail is set to become a reality, after Town Council awarded Phase 1 of the Town’s Wayfinding Signage Project Tuesday night.
Based on a set of pre-determined criteria, a submission by Blanchett Neon scored the highest among eight proposals received. The Edmonton-based sign company was subsequently awarded the project for an amount of $108,050, and will now begin to construct and install directional signage around town.
“The merits of wayfinding signage have been discussed for several years now in Innisfail, so it’s great to see this project finally moving forward,” said Henry Wong, the Town’s Director of Community Services. “Both residents and visitors will benefit from being able to much more easily find their way to and from important facilities, landmarks and points of interest.”
The multi-phase wayfinding project will be carried out over several years, with future phases set to see the implementation of gateway (entrance) and other signage.
The project came to fruition in light of an assessment carried out by tourism expert Roger Brooks in 2015. In a summary report, Brooks noted a lack of wayfinding signage as being detrimental to the town’s economy, and recommended that the implementation of such a program be considered.
Not long after, the Town awarded a contract to Bond Creative Inc. of Calgary to oversee the creation of a wayfinding program. A Community Advisory Committee was struck and met several times thereafter to discuss potential sign locations and esthetics. The results of those meetings were reflected in administration’s final recommendation to council, who approved the contract after finalizing details of construction and base materials Tuesday night.
