A three-month pilot program will offer increased transportation options for Innisfail Handivan users.
For three months beginning Sept. 22, the handivan will operate Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday mornings/afternoons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This marks an addition to the unit’s Monday-to-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. current service.
The recommendation to undertake the pilot was given by the Transportation Service Review Committee — members of which have been evaluating current needs and gaps in community transportation and providing subsequent recommendations to council. Council approved the three-month pilot on Monday, Sept. 10.
The Royal Canadian Legion (Branch #104), which operates the handivan, will offer the additional service at no further cost to the Town. Ridership/usage will be evaluated at the end of the three-month period to determine the need for, and viability of, a permanent increase in hours.
Council on Sept. 10 heard that the ongoing pursuit of a new handivan was progressing well, with a number of bids having been received and reviewed. A recommendation on a potential purchase was expected from the Transportation Committee this fall.
