The unfortunate June 2018 circumstances that led to the early euthanization of an unregistered cat this year prompted the Town to revisit the current Animal Control Bylaw 1537 and review opportunities to improve internal policies, procedures, and training.
Some of the resulting key changes are as follows:
- Alberta Animal Services in Red Deer will provide an adoption service for the Town of Innisfail. This service will include a full vet check, spaying or neutering, as well as microchipping.
- Due to the identified challenges of caring for impounded animals over weekends and evenings, the Town has formalized a contract with “It’s a Dogs World Pet Resort” in Bowden. With the availability of an isolation area at the Resort, they will provide the Town with the ability to kennel any animal the Town’s care outside normal work hours. The fees included in this service will be offset with savings in respect to overtime and the impound fees charged to owners.
- The Town will make every effort within its resources to establish ownership of lost pets. Pet owners can be reunited with their pets quicker by licensing them (mandatory) with the Town and having them collared and tagged, and/or microchipped.
- Residents requesting a cat trap from the Town will be required to sign a supplementary waiver form that details requirements under the bylaw for the use of the trap, and clearly directs them to contact the Town’s Peace Officer when an animal is caught in the trap.
These changes will result in more effective service and eliminate the potential for a healthy animal in the Town’s care being euthanized in the future.
The current Animal Control Bylaw remains under review and administration will be bringing forward recommendations to Council for approval this September.

It has come to our attention that there is a phone scam currently happening in the Innisfail community. The caller is claiming to be a Town employee, using a 227 caller ID listing Town of Innisfail Water, and saying that the Town now takes credit cards for prepayments.
Please note that this is NOT the Town of Innisfail and we DO NOT take credit cards for payments. We also DO NOT request other personal information, such as SIN numbers, over the phone.
The RCMP have been made aware of the situation and should you receive such a call, please contact the RCMP at 403-227-3342.
