I was born in Lacombe and lived in Red Deer for many years. I achieved my Electrical Mechanic journeyman certificate and worked for Certified Rentals in Red Deer for almost 10 years. Due to health issues, I retired from Certified and purchased a quarter of land at Clive, AB. My uncles farmed around this area, so I was helping them as well as establishing Doug's Exotic Zoo Farm – which I owned and operated with my wife Debbi for 13 years. We moved our operation to Innisfail in 2002 and opened to the public in 2003.
We have been very involved in the Innisfail community by serving on many volunteer boards and committees, including the Innisfail Ag Society, Community Service Panel and the Innisfail Chamber of Commerce. In the fall of 2013, I was elected to Town Council for the first time, and I also still serve as the President of the Chamber of Commerce.
I have two children, Shane and Serena, who both have lived in Innisfail for about 13 years. I also have three grandchildren, Quissianna, Q'ielon and Blake. Shane recently moved to Bowden and Serena continues to live here and works for us at Discovery Wildlife Park as our head zookeeper.
