The following are highlights from the August 23, 2021 Regular Meeting of Council.
CAO Report – Alberta Transportation Meeting
Town CAO Todd Becker reported to Council that he and members of Town Administration had a preliminary meeting with Alberta Transportation regarding speed limits on Highway 54. As a result, Alberta Transportation will consider a review. Council accepted the report as information.
Heliport Reconstruction Project
The tender process for the Heliport project closed on August 11. On Monday, Council reviewed the submitted bids and directed Administration to include the project for deliberation as part the 2022 capital projects budget. A second motion was passed directing Administration to prepare a proposal for a community fund-raising program associated with the Heliport.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On June 4, 2021, the Federal Government received Royal Assent for an amendment to the Labour Code. This created a new federal statutory holiday, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which will be observed on September 30 of each calendar year beginning in 2021.
At Monday’s meeting, Innisfail Town Council passed a motion to recognize September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, designating it as general holiday for the Town of Innisfail. Consequently, the designation of ‘Easter Monday’ as a recognized Town holiday was rescinded.
Bylaw 1676-2021 to Amend the 61 Avenue Special Tax Bylaw
On August 9, 2021, Council directed Administration to draft an amending bylaw to the 61 Avenue Special Tax Bylaw (1667-2021) to address some discrepancies in the wording of this original bylaw. On Monday, Council gave first, second and third readings, approving the amending Bylaw (1676-2021).
Innisfail Eagles Hockey Club – Outstanding Account Balance and Penalty Fees
The Innisfail Eagles Hockey Club submitted a request to reverse penalties incurred as a result of the club’s outstanding invoices. Council carried a motion to rescind the penalties totalling $1,468.87. Administration also reviewed the Town’s ice booking policy and, as a result, Council carried a motion requiring full payment of future invoices before subsequent monthly ice time can be booked.
Innisfail Eagles/Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament
After receiving a request, Council passed a motion to be a hole sponsor for the upcoming Innisfail Eagles/Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament. Council agreed to allow the club to sell the spot associated with the sponsorship.
