Council Highlights – June 6, 2022

The following are highlights from the Monday, June 6, 2022 Special Meeting of Council


Delegations: Kelly Kierluk, Community Futures; Sarah Aspinall, BGSD Consulting Corporation General Manager Kelly Kierluk provided Council with an overview of the services provided by Community Futures Central Alberta. This was followed by a presentation from Sarah Aspinall of BGSD Consulting detailing the elements of social procurement.

Transition Accelerator – Net-zero Course

Transition Accelerator is a non-profit organization that promotes positive, transformative reforms that address societal concerns while prompting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. On Administration’s recommendation, Council approved a motion to have Administration organize and deliver the Transition Accelerator’s Pathways to Net Zero course for June 20 – 21 2022.

Alberta Municipalities Power+ Program

Alberta Municipalities (AM) energy program for municipalities was launched at the time Alberta deregulated its electric utility industry. AM heard demand from its members for stable, long-term energy rates. Now, they have created a new energy offering, Power+. After reviewing the program, Council passed a motion authorizing the execution of the Power+ contract and for the Town to participate in AM’s Power+ program for procurement of electricity starting January 1, 2024.

Recreation/Aquatic Centre General Contractor Selection

To move forward on the Town’s proposed recreation centre project, a formal request for proposal (RFP) was released earlier this year. The RFP closed on May 13, with two contractor submissions. On recommendation of Administration, Council approved a motion to award the Recreation/Aquatic Centre General Contractor contract to Chandos Construction Ltd.

Dodd’s Lake Verbal Update

Director of Operations Steven Kennedy provided council with an update on the Town’s management of the Dodd’s Lake recreation area. After brief discussion, Council passed a motion to accept the report as information.

RCMP Annual Performance Plan – RCMP S/Sgt. Matechuk, Manager Leith

Annually, the Innisfail RCMP requests community input though a public survey. After reviewing the survey results, the Innisfail Policing and Safe Community Committee – at their May 19 meeting – identified strategic priorities for the upcoming year. On June 6, Council approved three RCMP strategic priorities as recommended by the committee, which are: Crime Prevention, with a focus on the areas of property and vehicle theft; Community Engagement, with a focus on in-person engagement; and Visibility, with a focus on multi-agency traffic safety operations.

Proclamation – Pride Month, Raising of Pride Flag

At the request of the Innisfail Pride Society, Council proclaimed June as Pride month in Innisfail. As part of the motion, Council approved a request to fly the pride flag during the weekend of June 24-27, 2022.
