The Town is continuing its efforts to ensure the availability of quality recreation facilities in the community, and in February will be seeking YOUR input on the potential (re)development of new and existing facilities!
A number of options are currently being explored around both the Innisfail Aquatic Centre and the feasibility/viability of a multiplex-type facility. The next phase of stakeholder engagement on the matter will commence in February, with community members to be consulted on the various scenarios that have been developed.
Keep an eye on Town communications over the next couple of weeks to learn how you can participate!
Background
A considerable amount of work has been completed over the past number of years to understand the stage at which the Innisfail Aquatic Centre currently lies with respect to its projected lifespan, and to plan any repairs and upgrades necessary to ensure the facility’s longevity into the future. The facility was constructed around the mid-1980s.
Weighing up the cost of repairs relative to the anticipated remaining lifespan of the building, and building upon the findings of stakeholder engagement carried out on the matter over the past couple of years, Innisfail Town Council in 2020 initiated the process of reviewing opportunities for the facility’s renovation and/or redevelopment. A series of options was subsequently developed and presented with the contracted assistance of HCMA Architecture.
With continuing discussions around the community’s long-term recreation needs, however, and the ability to explore the consolidation and centralization of recreation activities while combining aspects of social, cultural and wellness facilitation, an additional option was recently added that would explore the development of a multi-purpose recreation facility (i.e., a ‘multiplex’).
Accordingly, input will be sought from stakeholders on the proposed renovation, expansion or reconstruction of the Innisfail Aquatic Centre and/or the development of a multiplex.
Further details will be posted as they become available. Watch www.innisfail.ca for updates.
