The following are highlights from the Monday, July 10, 2023 Regular Meeting of Town Council.
Medical Resident Welcome Package
Each year, approximately 20 resident doctors practice in Innisfail. After meeting with representatives from the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, Mayor Jean Barclay proposed at the July 10, 2023 meeting that the Town present a small gift to doctors completing their residency in Innisfail. Council then carried a motion to allocate $2,000 from the Town’s operating reserve to cover the cost of the gift packages.
Southwest Industrial Park Shallow Utility Servicing Contract
In June 2023, the Town accepted tenders for the installation of shallow utilities in the new Southwest Industrial Park. Four contractors submitted bids on the project. On July 10, 2023, Council carried a motion awarding the contract to Davidson Powerline for $970,790.75 to be funded from the Land Acquisition/Servicing Reserve.
Video Recording of Meetings Policy
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Town council meetings were made available to the public via Zoom. When Council was permitted to return to the Town’s Council Chambers, the town transitioned to livestreams of the meetings. A number of technical challenges arose which led to the failure of some broadcasts; however, recordings of the meetings have consistently been made available to the public. To formalize a process, Council carried a motion approving the Video Recording of Council Meetings Policy 2023-004 at the July 10, 2023 meeting. Council then carried a second motion directing administration to engage the community’s internet providers to determine available bandwidth.
Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Committee Appointments
Town councillors have expressed interest in sitting on FCM committees. This role requires travel and therefore has associated costs. At the July 10 meeting, Council carried a motion supporting Councillor Messaros’s bid to participate on an FCM committee.
Innisfail Town Council strives to maintain a level of openness with its residents. The highlights only briefly touch upon the exchanges and decisions reached during the most recent Council meeting.
