The Town of Innisfail is launching a program to help motivate citizens to become more physically active while helping them attain their New Year’s resolutions before the new year even begins.
The launch of this program marks the first time the Town has offered a virtual physical fitness challenge.
A virtual challenge is a fitness program in which participants attempt reach a predesignated goal. These goals are usually set out as a distance represented by a real-world route.
In the Town’s challenge, these real-world benchmarks will be represented by the slope length of Revelstoke Mountain Resort for youth (a distance of 55 km) and the Sunshine Village slope length for adults (a distance of 109 km).
Registrants can complete these distances by walking, swimming, running, biking, or by participating in any other activity requiring linear movement. The distances are recorded through My Virtual Mission, a free app that can be downloaded to a personal activity tracker such as a Fitbit, or to devices such as an Apple Watch. The app also displays each participant’s location on an online map.
Competitors will begin their challenge on December 1, 2020 and will have until February 28, 2021 to accumulate their total distance. Upon completing the challenge, competitors will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt acknowledging their participation.
Registration is required by visiting the “Activities” link at www.innisfail.ca/register. The cost for the youth program is $40 (use code #13302), while the adult program is $45 (use code #13301).
