North Area Structure Plan
Welcome to the North Area Structure Plan Update Page
The Town of Innisfail is updating the North Area Structure Plan that was originally written in 2001. The plan will cover all of the lands in the north part of Innisfail with Highway 54 as its west boundary and the QE2 Highway as its east boundary. This area is shown in the aerial photo below and includes all the land contained within the red dashed line.
This page will be updated as the project progresses. Please check back from time to time to see:
– updates on the project and where we are at in the process;
– materials to review and comment on; and
– notices about opportunities for your participation.
Updated North Area Structure Plan - June 2021
The lands within the northern portion of the Town of Innisfail are long-term expansion areas for future residential, commercial, and industrial growth and open space. The intent of this plan is to provide guidance on the type of development envisioned for the area and to ensure that development proceeds in an orderly and economical manner.
A draft of the updated North Area Structure Plan was presented to Council and a public hearing was held at the June 14, 2021 Regular Meeting of Council. The new NASP was approved as presented.

What does the North Area Structure Plan do?
The North Area Structure Plan provides direction for future land use patterns and processes to subdivide and develop lands. It maps out areas for future residential neighbourhoods west of C&E Trail and areas for future industrial parks east of C&E Trail.
Topics addressed in the North Area Structure Plan include:
- Types of uses and general land use patterns such as future residential, open space, recreation, commercial and industrial activity areas;
- Major roadways and trail corridors;
- School sites, parks and open space areas;
- Number of future housing units, population and density of residential development;
- Concepts for the extension of municipal water, wastewater and storm water management systems;
- Natural features that are to be preserved;
- Expectations for the process to subdivide and/or develop lands; and
- General order or phasing of future subdivision and development of the area
A copy of the current North Area Structure Plan (without the proposed updates in the new draft plan) can be downloaded here.
Draft plan for public review
How can I be involved?
Two virtual presentations and open houses about the Draft Plan took on Wednesday, March 3 and Thursday, March 4, 2021. Each session had the same content and contained a presentation about the Draft Plan followed by questions and discussion.
We are interested in your thoughts and suggestions about the Draft North Area Structure Plan. You can share them with us by emailing them to craig.teal@pcps.ab.ca or calling 403-343-3394 (please ask for Craig). Written comments can also be dropped off at the Town Office.
Comments received before or by March 12, 2021 are greatly appreciated!
Next steps in the process
After the public review and comment period ends (March 12, 2021), the input received will be used to determine if changes are needed to the Draft Plan.
A Proposed Plan will then be presented to Town Council so they can consider formal adoption. This includes the hosting of a public hearing on the Proposed Plan before Council makes a decision. Further notice and advertisement will take place when this part of the process begins. At this point formal adoption is expected to take place in May-June 2021.
