Statement by Innisfail Mayor Jim Romane – June 9, 2020

Jun 10, 2020 | 0 comments

As mayor of Innisfail, I made a few comments in a recent news article that, in hindsight, were neither acceptable nor reflective of the citizens I represent.

Since I made these comments, I’ve received many messages pointing out my lack of awareness on what is a tremendously important subject.

I receive this feedback with the clear understanding that I need to do better.

Racism and racial inequality, unfortunately, exist everywhere. Our community — despite my recent comments — is no exception.

Humbly, I fully acknowledge and accept that I have much learning to do on the topic, and am committed to doing better. I’d like to use this situation as an opportunity to educate myself on the many, many racism-related issues of which I admittedly know far too little. My personal ignorance, in this instance, was simply inexcusable.

As we start down the path toward better understanding, myself and the rest of Town Council will be standing in solidarity with those attending the peaceful rally that’s being planned for our community this Saturday. We’ll be there to learn and to listen.

Further, the Town over the next few days will be reaching out to organizers of the event to offer support, assistance and resources as needed to welcome and ensure the safety of all who would like to participate.

As council, we recognize that words are futile in the absence of action, and today, we committed by resolution to explore and initiate the actions necessary to better understand and address the racism that exists right here in our community.

While we don’t yet know what all of those actions will look like, rest assured that they remain council’s utmost priority moving forward. I look forward to communicating further details as they become available.

I want to thank Brittany for bringing awareness to this important issue locally, and for helping lead the way toward a more welcoming and inclusive community.

Let’s keep the discussion going.

Jim Romane

Mayor, Town of Innisfail
