Yearly Assessments

This is the process of placing a dollar value on a property in order to calculate the amount of taxes that will be charged on that property. In Alberta, properties are based on the market value of the property.

Innisfail assessment services are contracted out to Wildrose Assessment Services. Assessments are completed on properties in Innisfail by January of each year.

Tax Rates

Town Council sets the residential and non-residential tax rates or “mill rates” in the spring of each year. These are based on the budgeted funds required to operate and maintain the municipality for that year, as well as the Provincial School Levy. The School Levy is the amount that will be collected by the Town and then paid directly to the Province of Alberta to maintain and develop the school system.

When determining property taxes, all municipalities are required, by law, to follow the guidelines contained in the Municipal Government Act. The tax amount on your Assessment & Tax Notice is for taxes levied from January to December of the current year. All taxes are due and payable by June 30th.

What you end up paying taxes for is determined by a simple formula:

Assessment x Mill Rate = Property Taxes

Tax Penalties and Methods of Payment

All taxes are payable and due on June 30th. An 8% penalty will be added as of July 1st to all current taxes not paid by June 30th. An additional 4% penalty will be added September 1st if current taxes are not paid by August 31st. Any taxes remaining unpaid by December 31st will be charged an additional 12% penalty as of January 1st.

When taxes are paid by a mortgage company, it is still the property owner’s responsibility to ensure the taxes are paid prior to the due date.

Any property with taxes in arrears for more than one year may be subject to further proceedings under the Municipal Government Act and its amendments.

Your taxes can be paid using the following options:

  • At the Innisfail Town Office, 4943 53 Street, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm; Cash, cheque or debit card accepted.
